Brief History

Rev. Dr. S.A. Arulaiah, Bishop of Cuddapah, invited the Salesians to the Pungannur mission in 1988. It was started on the first of October 1988, the death centenary of Don Bosco by Fr. Chinnappa Thomas. The Bishop canonically erected the Punganur centre with Don Bosco as patron.

Activities

1.Boarding for Boys

In the five-acre plot bought and given by the bishop at Marlapalle, the infrastructure of the mission centre was established named “Don Bosco Navajeevan”. It consisted of the  offices, residence for salesians, and a hostel for 50 boys. Besides, the boarding home for the boys of the mission, evening tuition centre for school children, Balawadi for pre-school children and the Sunday oratory, was started here.

2. English Medium and Telugu Medium Schools

In June 1992, the Telugu medium high school and in 2005 an English medium school were started. The school caters to the students from different social and economical backgrounds. Since there is a lack of transportation, the school provides them with bus services. The school is known for sports and extracurricular activities such as science fare, fancy fete, etc. The school recently won the inter school football tournament. Three of the players were selected to be part of the Chittoor District team.

MACS

Give credit to women: The Salesians have federated 53 self Help groups of marginalized women in Punganur, Peddapanjani, Sodum, Ramasamundram, Chowdepally Mandals to form a Mutually Aided Co-operative Society (MACS). The MACS is a thrift and credit society Governed by a “board of directors” elected by the members. The society makes credit available to the members in proportion to their savings. This enables the group to organize micro entrepreneurship activity locally and enhance their income.

Vision:

“We, the Salesians of Don Bosco Punganur envisage working towards building up  the development of the poor rural youth through integral education and non-formal training to make them agents of social and economic transformation in the society in and around Punganur and Ramasamudram Mandals.”

 Mission:

  • To offer English medium education to the target group.
  • To provide non-formal training to the school dropouts, child labourers and economically weaker sections of the target group.
  • To offer job placement opportunities to the poor youth.
